Walk into Wing Wo Wholesale on Flower Market Road on a sweltering July morning and you will see the same sorry sight: rows of gerbera with heads dropped, lisianthus furling in on themselves, and roses gasping in their buckets. Hong Kong’s summer market is a graveyard for standard cut flowers. Yet in one cooler, stacked high in poly sleeves, sits a flower that does not just tolerate 34°C with 90 per cent humidity — it thrives. ‘Pacifica Peach’, a new zinnia cultivar from Benary, sold 34,000 stems through the Yau Ma Tei cluster in June alone, according to the Hong Kong Flower Wholesalers Association. That is a 280 per cent increase over the same month in 2023. The question is not whether this flower is a novelty. The question is whether it signals a fundamental rethinking of what should fill a Hong Kong summer cooler.

The Genetic Silver Bullet

‘Pacifica Peach’ is not your grandmother’s zinnia. Its lineage traces back to a single wild population of Zinnia violacea collected in the Oaxaca highlands at 1,800 metres elevation — a region of extreme diurnal temperature swings and monsoon-like wet seasons. Dr Iris Harkness, Benary’s lead breeder in Kaltenkirchen, Germany, spent 14 generations back-crossing that wild stock with elite commercial lines to fix two traits rarely found together: a thick, waxy cuticle that reduces transpiration by an estimated 40 per cent, and a recessive gene for delayed petal abscission that keeps the flower intact for up to 14 days post-harvest in controlled trials. The result is a stem that can survive a weekend in a delivery van without a cooler — a reality for many of Hong Kong’s smaller island-based florists who lack refrigerated logistics.

Performance genetics come at a premium. A bunch of ten ‘Pacifica Peach’ stems carried a wholesale price of HK$85 in late June, compared to HK$32 for standard ‘Giant Dahlia’ mix from the same supplier. That 2.7x markup would be fatal in a commodity category, but zinnias occupy a peculiar niche. Mr Kevin Tsang, procurement manager at Wing Wo Wholesale, reports that the premium cultivar sells out by 10:00 AM on market days, while cheaper stems linger until evening. The calculation is simple: a florist who loses 20 per cent of a standard shipment to heat damage is effectively paying HK$40 per usable bunch for the cheap product. At HK$85 with near-zero waste, the ‘Pacifica’ line is the cheaper option by the time it reaches the customer.

Import data from the Census and Statistics Department reinforces the shift. In the first half of 2024, Hong Kong imported 2.1 million stems of zinnia from Germany, the Netherlands, and Israel — a 47 per cent jump over the same period in 2023. By contrast, imports of heat-sensitive spray carnations fell 12 per cent. The supply chain is voting with its purchase orders, and the winner is the breeder who invested in summer genetics five years ago.

Why the Hong Kong Window Matters

Hong Kong’s summer is not just hot — it is a biologically perverse season for most cut flowers. The combination of high vapour pressure deficit and low night-time cooling means that even hardy chrysanthemums show stress after Day 3. Local growers, concentrated in the Yuen Long and Fanling vegetable belts, have largely abandoned flower production between June and August, leaving the market entirely reliant on air-freighted imports. That creates a price spike and a quality trough — the worst of both worlds for florists trying to serve wedding clients who refuse to book in November.

Summer-seasonal analysis from the Hong Kong Flower Market Report shows that average wholesale prices for standard mixed bouquets rise 18 per cent in July, while waste rates at the retail level climb past 25 per cent. For a medium-sized shop like Floral Harmony in Wan Chai, that translates to roughly HK$12,000 in spoiled stock per month. The margin compression is brutal. A cultivar like ‘Pacifica Peach’ that can slash waste to 5 per cent does not just improve profitability — it transforms the entire summer business model from defensive to offensive. Florists can market a “summer-proof” guarantee, charge a premium, and actually deliver on it.

The Competition Wakes Up

Benary is not alone in this genetic pursuit. Syngenta Flowers has trialled a heat-tolerant lisianthus series tentatively named ‘Fahrenheit’ in the Philippines and is expected to bring it to the Hong Kong market in 2025. Danziger’s ‘Summer Breeze’ statice line, bred in the Negev desert, already holds significant market share in the SAR’s dried-flower segment. But the zinnia category is particularly ripe for disruption because it has been genetically stagnant for two decades. The standard offerings from Gold Medal and American Seed have changed little since the early 2000s. A breeder who moves first locks in distributor loyalty and shelf space that can take years to dislodge.

Mr Alex Ng, owner of Sun Ming Wholesale in Western District, has already placed a standing order for 5,000 stems per week of ‘Pacifica Peach’ for the 2025 summer season. “I don’t care if other suppliers offer me cheaper,” he says. “I care that I can put this flower in a van at 7 AM and deliver it to a shop in Stanley at 3 PM and it still looks like it was cut that morning. There is no other product in my cooler that does that in July.”

The Second-Order Effects

The rise of heat-tolerant genetics will not merely shift market share among breeders. It will likely reshape what Hong Kong florists consider a summer staple. The traditional summer reliance on tropical flowers — bird of paradise, heliconia, anthurium — may loosen as temperate-genus cultivars adapted to tropical heat proliferate. Dr Harkness confirms that Benary is already trialling a heat-tolerant snapdragon and a low-transpiration delphinium in its warm-climate test facility in Kenya. If those succeed, the entire palette of the Hong Kong summer bouquet could shift within five years.

That possibility should alarm any florist who has internalised the belief that summer is simply a season of compromise. It is not. It is a season of genetic opportunity. The florists who prosper in Hong Kong’s August heat will not be those who buy the cheapest stems. They will be those who understand that the cost of a flower is not its purchase price, but its price divided by the number of days it lasts in a customer’s vase. By that metric, ‘Pacifica Peach’ is not expensive. It is a bargain that the rest of the market has not yet fully priced in.

A flower that refuses to wilt is more than a novelty. It is a challenge to every assumption the industry has made about summer. And if the breeders keep their word, the only thing wilting in next July’s heat will be the old way of thinking.


What the wholesale data does not capture is the quiet logistics revolution happening inside Wing Wo’s back cooler. On a Friday morning in late July, Mr Kevin Tsang walks me through the receiving bay where pallets are sorted. The ‘Pacifica Peach’ boxes go straight to a dedicated shelving zone — not because they need special treatment, but because they need none at all. “We used to store these on the floor with the rest of the stock,” he says, gesturing at a rack stacked six feet high with poly-sleeved bunches. “Then we noticed something: the stems on the top shelf, exposed to the heat of the lights, lasted exactly as long as the ones on the bottom, near the evaporator. That changed how we think about inventory.”

That observation, small as it sounds, has upended a core assumption of wholesale flower management. Standard operating procedure in Hong Kong’s un-air-conditioned wholesale halls is to rotate stock by heat sensitivity — placing roses, delphiniums, and lisianthus closest to the coldest air. Zinnias, as a rule, went near the door. But with ‘Pacifica Peach’, the temperature gradient inside a cooler matters less than the cultivar’s intrinsic transpiration resistance. Dr Harkness’s data shows that the waxy cuticle reduces moisture loss by 40 per cent even at 30°C ambient temperature. That means a wholesaler can bin the old rule book. “I am not joking when I say we have stopped checking this flower for wilting before dispatch,” Mr Tsang adds, tapping a sleeve of ‘Pacifica Peach’ stems. “We never did that with anything else. Not even chrysanthemums.”

This has a direct effect on delivery scheduling. Standard practice in Yau Ma Tei is to dispatch heat-sensitive flowers by 8:30 AM, before the refrigerated vans lose their charge under the midday sun. ‘Pacifica Peach’ can be loaded at 11:00 AM and delivered to an island shop in Cheung Chau by 2:30 PM with no visible decline. That flexibility shaves three hours off the logistics crunch that drives most wholesale operations into a frantic morning rush. Mr Tsang estimates that the reduced time pressure has allowed his warehouse team to process 12 per cent more orders per shift since June, simply because they are not racing against the temperature clock. The cobenefit — fewer cracked stems from hurried handling — is a gift the data does not yet measure, but every florist in the chain feels it.
